I will therefore explain to you its origin, its history, but also its benefits and virtues.

Origin and History

This very old stone owes its name to a character from ancient Rome, a certain Obsius, who would have been the first to find this rock in Ethiopia.

The Obsidian is a natural volcanic rock.

This stone is formed when the lava solidifies. The transformation from liquid to solid is so rapid that minerals do not have time to crystallize.

In prehistoric times

Prehistoric men used theObsidian as raw material for the manufacture of their weapons. She is indeed very sharp if you break it, which makes it a formidable weapon.

Many traces of Obsidian have been found in the Neolithic, in southern Europe. There was in particular a trade around stone, which was transported from the volcanoes of present-day Italy.

In ancient times

Some used Obsidian mirrors.

Today

Obsidian is a glassy volcanic rock which is rich in silica. There are many kinds of Obsidians, this is how the composition of this stone varies from one stone to another.

Opaque and translucent, this stone has a vitreous luster. Like glass, it also has a conchoidal break. This means that if you break it, it will look similar to the inside of a seashell.

On the Mohs scale, its hardness is 5 to 5.5. It is therefore capable of scratching glass.

Sometimes it may be that the Obsidian glass recrystallizes. This is how we obtain in particular Obsidian "snowflake".
